The area around Ewha Women’s University, Korea’s famous women’s university, is commonly called Ewha Women’s University Fashion Street. This district features a number of stalls lining the streets selling fashion items, such as clothing, shoes and accessories, for young women. It offers a distinctive shopping experience, with all the fun of a “shop-crawl” from stall to stall and store to store along the narrow alleyways.

This street is a popular fashion destination for young women. Compared to other areas, it has many more items aimed at young women from late teens to early 20s. Walking down from Ewha Women’s University subway station to the main entrance of Ewha Women’s University, and turning into an alley on the left, there are a number of street stalls lining the street. Furthermore, the alley on the right side of the main entrance to the university contains many designer shops as well.

Recently, this fashion street has seen new changes: a few major shopping malls have taken the place of large and small stores set in alleys, offering consumers still more choice. For instance, there is YESapm, which is easily accessible as it is close to the subway station. YESapm also features a plaza at the front, which provides a place to rest while out shopping. It often stages various events and performances, and has become a new landmark in the neighborhood. The far side of the building is connected to the district in which the street stalls are concentrated, offering a one-stop shopping opportunity.
Another specialty of the fashion street that cannot be missed is the alterations services, where tailors have taken alterations to a new level of design expertise.

The fashion street is also famous for its concentration of hair salons. Customers can try out a new hairstyle from the newest trends to retro styles. As so many salons are concentrated in one area, prices are kept competitive but quality of service remains high, so that the level of satisfaction amongst customers here is high. Overseas visitors often come here to treat themselves to a hairstyle while touring Seoul.

Stopping to eat along the street
The most popular snack on the fashion street is tteokbokki. This is a Korean stir-fried dish made of sliced rice cakes with vegetables and seasonings. It gets its distinctive spicy character from being seasoned with gochujang, a hot paste made from chilli peppers. So many people enjoy tteokbokki that there is even a Tteokbokki Street in front of Ewha Women’s University, with street stalls selling nothing but tteokbokki.

After a stroll around the fashion street, a visit to Ewha Women’s University is very worthwhile. This is Korea’s most prestigious women’s university, and has produced a female prime minister as well as numerous members of the National Assembly. It was also visited by Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Korea. Moreover, its beautiful campus makes it a perfect place for taking a stroll while enjoying shopping.
