Over the years, I have been to numerous festivals around Korea. Recently, I was able to take one of the foreigner/tourist shuttle buses to this Gangwon province festival. For foreigners, the whole trip is almost free.
There are several shuttles buses, that depart from the duty free shop, at Gwanghwamun Station in Seoul. The Jeonju shuttle bus is free and the Gangwon shuttle bus is just W5,000 return. Admission to this festival is free for foreigners, they even give coupons that can be used within the festival.
Ice-fishing was a major event at this festival. So, I decided to do this first, since it was close to lunch time, and any fish caught can be barbequed and eaten right away.
Three mountain trout were allowed per person. The ticket was about W10,000 and they gave a W5,000 coupon back to use at the festival.
After looking around the art display, I was told to touch the golden fish. This is supposed to bring good luck. The Ice Illumination Plaza is the home of the world’s largest indoor ice sculpture exhibition. This was my main reason to attend this festival, and it was spectacular.
Once again, I paid an entrance fee and received a W3,000 coupon back. This would be used later at one of the many food stalls.
Here you can see some of the very detailed and amazing ice sculptures:
After viewing the ice sculptures, I headed back to the main area of the festival.
Here is a list of things you can do at this festival:
- ice-fishing
- lure fishing
- curling
- segway rentals
- 4-wheel bicycle rentals
- ice sledding
- fishing with bare hands
- foot ice hockey
- ice sculpture viewing
- eating from vendors
