Gochang-gun's dolmen site is regarded a central place for world's prehistoric culture, highly recognized for its values and listed as World Heritage by the UNESCO in December, 2000.
This dolmen site is the largest its kind, presumably clustered in Gochang-gun Jukrim-ri and Asan-myeon Sanggap-ri around B.C. 4~5; with Maesan Village at the center, the site has 447 dolmens all across within the radius of 1,764m from its East to West, weathering the passage of time to keep its mystery intact - truly a living museum of giant dolmens.
The site demonstrates how sophisticated and ingenious the technologies of our ancestors were. Also, the dolmens in Gochang come in various shapes from table (Northern style) and checkerboard (Southern style) to box type. These dolmens, monuments near tombs made for funeral ceremonies, vividly show us the ancient architectural techniques and the social phenomenons at that time. There are six courses to take in total, all laid close to each other except for the sixth one. You may take a small dolmen train in the site. But we recommend walking inside to fully enjoy the site.
Near the site, there is Gochang Dolmen Museum, the first of its kind in Korea - a three-story building with sculptures and murals that depict the life of the Bronze Age and with imaging facilities, Information-search Desk, and World's Dolmen Culture Introduction Corner.
