About

Samcheonggak is a traditional cultural center comprising five outbuildings and the main building of Ilhwadang. The hanok (traditional Korean house) buildings are used as performance venues and restaurants and are set in some 20 square kilometers of peaceful green surroundings with Bugaksan (Mt.) in the background. This beautiful setting is a popular location for TV dramas and also attracts visitors from around 30 foreign embassies.

A tranquil setting

As the central building of Samcheonggak, Ilhwadang, whose name means "Let the South and North be one," hosted a banquet for delegations from the South and North Korean Red Cross in 1972. Today Ilhwadang offers a range of facilities including a performance hall, Korean restaurant and traditional teahouse; the front yard is also used as a traditional performance venue for a variety of outdoor events.

Cheongcheondang is famous for its history as the place where President Park Chung-hee often held banquets and meetings during the military regime. At present, it is mainly used as a banqueting and ceremonial hall. Dongbaekheon is used for smaller meetings and also offers Korean dining experiences, including tea ceremonies and the chance to sample fine Korean cuisine.

Once surrounded by a barbed-wire fence to keep out North Korean spies, the 900 square kilometers of Bugaksan mountain trails surrounding the Korean presidential residence, Cheongwadae (the Blue House), opened to the public in 2009. The lack of visitors in the past has allowed wildlife to flourish on Bugaksan making the area another of Samcheonggak's many attractions.

Samcheonggak also offers traditional culture experience programs, including Korean fine dining and a traditional Korean costume experience, each of which welcomes international visitors.
